The most common theory about why there is a group called Generation X is due to their parents' birth years. People who are considered members of Generation X were born from 1965-1980. These individuals are referred to as being in the Silent Generation since they grew up during the era when adults did not have access to mass media such as television, magazines, and newspapers.
Because these older generations didn't have technology like computers, cell phones, and social networking sites, they didn't broadcast information about adulthood to kids of young ages. As a result, children under the age of 10 weren't exposed to many examples of successful grownups so they couldn't learn anything about self-confidence by observing them.
This lack of exposure to success stories can influence someone's perception of what the job market looks like and whether or not they feel that they're ready to start exploring career options. It also may contribute to those teens developing some form of cynicism towards others and life in general.
Bearing all of this thinking together, Generation X comes into existence because these skeptical teenagers begin to refer to themselves as being part of the Generation X.
Technically, you could call this generation “The Me Decade” since they lived their lives focused more on what makes them feel good about themselves rather than what other people think of them.
