It’s impossible to write a novel without keeping a journal. Your daily thoughts are important tools when it comes to plotting your novel.
They can help you get back to the moment when things got hairy (if you experience heat, that is).
Your journal should be private, as in nobody else should have access to its contents. However, if you’re interested in taking your writing career into your own hands, getting an agent or publishing house will depend on them being willing to work with you now.
You can also keep notes about your novel(s) that go along with their title idea. I like to do this by creating a different topic for each book. For instance, my next project is going to be a fantasy novel called ‘The Order of the Stone.’ Above all, you need to keep yourself organized and free from distractions.
That way, when you sit down to plot out your novel, you won’t fall behind. You’ll already know what you’re doing and how you want everything to flow.
It can be at your home, work or somewhere you feel comfortable. Make sure it is not too bulky because that is time consuming.
Also make sure it is in an easy to find place such as downstairs or behind where things are usually kept. You should also write down any ideas or thoughts that come up for you during this period so you do not forget them.
It can be new ideas, memories, concepts, or plans; whatever comes up first will help your body process the information.
Once you have some content saved into your brain, you’ll know what needs to be written about next.
The goal is to keep yourself inspired and prepared to write. This way you’re not wasting time trying to figure out how to start a story or how to get people talking inside of your head.
You’ve already decided that now is the time to write this story and these are the tools you need to use to build confidence.
Some days you may just stare at those notes you took today and think “oh yeah, there is something I want to write about today.” That’s okay – you’re still taking steps forward.
It is helpful to have a set number of topics to cover when you sit down to write. This way you will have several ideas already written down that day, making your writing more efficient.
For instance, you can start with a topic like “ next book to read” or “ best books for weekends away from home”. By having these pre-written notes ready to go, you will spend less time trying to come up with ideas and more time doing what you do well – writing.
It also helps you avoid spending too much time thinking about questions such as “ what should I write about?” or “ how will this article be seen by others?”.
Since you already have a few topics lined up, you can choose the one(s) that are most important/ relevant to yourself and your audience. That way you’ll pitch your articles to your readership (aka people / customers).
That way they won’t be irrelevant tidbits that take up space in your head and don’t help you move forward. Rather, it provides clarity in thinking about what matters and what doesn’t and makes changes to match your new habits.
One of the most basic, yet very effective ways to improve your writing is by creating a daily log. You can write down everything that you did in a day including little events and conversations as well as big projects.
This way you will have a full picture of how chaotic your days are and if there are any themes happening. Daily logs are also useful for people who work from home.
You can share these with your partner or friends so they can see what kinds of things you do and where you spend your time. It’s hard to make sense out of all this information after a week has passed, but it’s worth doing once before moving on to the next task.
The key here is to keep logging every single day of your life until you no longer have anything to log. Write short memos about major milestones or changes in your lifestyle and then go back and log extra bits that seem relevant.
After a few weeks start looking through the notes you've been taking and try to integrate them into your daily log. Then, look through your log again to see which ones get used and which ones don't.
That way you'll know which pieces of advice to use and which to throw away. The latter can be kept as memory aids.
It’s impossible to write good content if you don’t know where your notes are. Plus, having those notes in front of you can help keep you organized as you write.
Make these notes using prior years’ themes or topics. You may have thoughts about what makes a great article or book, for example.
You can also make note-taking screenshots (with images) of past articles or posts so you can organize information quickly.
This way, when you look through your notes, they will be familiar and easier to read. Your time will then be spent writing and creating new content, not spending hours going back and editing old stuff.
There are no rules for writing other than showing your readers in your words that you know what you mean and you care enough to say it properly. Many people think there are rules for writing, I don’t believe is necessary to break any rules; everyone has their own way of doing things.
What matters most is that you have a voice and people want to hear from you. No one will ever achieve great success by working without an original idea.
The difference between someone who succeeds and someone who doesn’t is that the successful person knew how to find his or her original ideas. It’s like asking someone who’s good at playing music how they started playing the guitar? You won’t get much info because he or she found something they were passionate about.
Even if you do not have a writing schedule, now is the time to start using your planning skills. Before you begin, make an outline, giving yourself enough room to write without too much interference from your thoughts or words.
This way you’ll be able to adequately express what you want to say. You will also need to know how to put your thought into written form. Your brain knows more than you think it does.
With a little preparation, you can get what you want out of your imagination and onto the page.
Be realistic about his or her skill set, but understand that ideas are king! There are many different ways to achieve any given goal.
The most important thing to remember as you develop as a writer is to be faithful in describing the characters’ emotions and interpretations of events (the meaning behind them). Most writers fail because they don’t follow a plot.
It’s hard to see the whole picture when you aren’t looking directly at it. Pay attention to what parts of the story move you; those are the things that matter to the story.
Keep going until you feel that you have brought something real to the story.
There are many ways to get feedback on your writing, including publishing it in a journal or on a community website. If you’re unsure about how to improve your writing, there are expert editors who can help you.
In some cases, this may be as simple as going into your favorite bookstore or online shop who have books that can help enhance your written work.
You can also find online resources for writers, like forums and blogs. It is important to remember, however, that even if someone comments on your paper they might not actually read it! So make sure to send a copy along after you comment on it.
A great way to get better feedback is to put yourself out there and share your work. People love reading stories that feel real and from the writer’s heart.
It takes time to develop trust with another person, so don’t give up if nobody seems to like what you have to say at first. A good listener will pick up on your anxiety and try to help you solve the problem.
The more people hear about your project, the better they will understand it and the easier it will be for them to recommend a course of action.
Communicating clearly is the key to any success in life, but especially when it comes to talking about mental illness. Words matter and when somebody is sensitive to something, they should be prepared to explain why.
Keep trying to
If you’re looking for help with your writing, then you should also consider helping others to write. Finding other people willing to work with you can make up for your own limitations.
A good mentoring relationship helps you develop as a writer and organically increases your readership. Many times, learning how to write is about overcoming our fear of vulnerability.
By being more aware of this fear, we can take actions to lower its effect on us. A good mentor will help you find ways to overcome your fear of vulnerability.
