Whether you’re writing a sales letter, business flyer or newsletter, your content needs to hold someone’s attention.

It should take them more than just a moment to read it or watch it.

You need to have a great opening line that catches people’s eyes and keeps them reading.

A good opening line makes someone want to know what happens next.

It creates a sense of urgency because the reader doesn’t want to miss anything.

They want to know how it ends.

Your purpose is to persuade them to do something – buy a product, sign up for a service, go somewhere, etc.

Keep this in mind as you write your story. You will also need to include details about who your audience is and what they are most interested in.

Keep your sentences short and punchy

When you write for effect, it’s important to keep your audience in mind. Since people read for entertainment, they want a good story and relevant information – but they also need reliable data and facts.

When you write “for them” instead of “to explain something,” think about what each group is already thinking or feeling. That way you’ll be more likely to get across the message you wish to send.

The first step is to put yourself in their shoes. Why would they possibly need to listen to you? Does your sentence have the same impact as it did before you asked someone else for help?

Also consider how different audiences may hear your words. Used correctly, variations can make your writing stronger. But don’t use these wrong, and you could turn a beautiful conversation into a crowd-stopping performance.

Use action words

Even if you are writing for an advertising purpose, you can use saleswords to draw the reader into reading the ad.

Action or active words are words that imply force and energy, such as “haste”, “speed”, “quickly”, and “immediately'.

They tell your readers what they should do next; what result they will get.

Your goal is to encourage them to take action immediately. With no actions added, any call-to-action (CTA) in your content may seem like nothing more than clean text.

Therefore, even if you are writing for an educational purpose, you can add some power words to grab the reader’s attention.

Make it personal to your audience

Always start with what is relevant to your reader

It’s much harder to get readers to connect to you or your content if you don’t make it personal. Your story is their tale, told by them using their words and voices.

They are going to read between lines (and beyond lines) to find out what happens next. You need to give them clues, but you also need to let them draw their own conclusions.

That way they’ll be able to relate to each other and feel like they belong to something bigger than just themselves.

You can make references to things that have happened in the past, things that may happen in the future, or even things that were true years ago. But for these hints to work, you’ll need to add a layer of authenticity.

Give away the end result, but imply that there was a process involved. Let people think that everything that ends up being popular came naturally.

Nobody works hard at making a great snack. People want to do good things.

Use subtext to describe content

In copywriting, there’s another way to use language to influence your readers’ perceptions of you and your product. That is through what I like to call “implicit communications.” With implicit communication, your message comes without being said directly.

For example, the color red can be considered an emotive expression. Even the smallest change to that color may seem minor, but it can make a difference in how people perceive something (and therefore how they feel about it).

Similarly, the words “free” and “faster” are implied by any promotional offer; someone who receives a free sample will understand that benefit just from reading the offer.

These are subtle effects that form when individuals read offers or ads with their inner mind and apply those images to everything else associated with the company.

Subtext is defined as all information received via visual imagery, so every time we see an ad with an image, a subtextual message is created. Subtext plays a critical role in advertising because we respond to subtler messages more readily than verbal messages.

If a picture is worth 1 million words, then a picture carries around 10 times the impact of text.

Know your target market

Once you know who your target market is, it’s time to find out what they are looking for. You can use surveys (some simple, some complex) or analytics tools to learn this information.

You also want to know how much money your customers spend before they buy something from you.

Money talks, so figure out how to attract and keep someone’s dollar by offering products that fulfill an unmet need of their buying experience.

It’s all about creating urgency because people feel pressure to make a decision. Urgency is created when you provide positive reasons for taking action now versus waiting later.

For example, let’s say you offer a great meal for $9.95 per person. “People eat food fast every day” is a negative reason to take action now, while saying things like, “Most people wait hours for a table” or “There aren’t many restaurants around here” are more positive reasons to act soon.

Restaurants with early reservations get better tables and be more likely to receive compensation. Let them try your food and drinks for free to see if they like them enough to book a reservation.

Do you like their shoes?

Shoe brands are appealing to people for a variety of reasons. Maybe they offer comfort, stability or support. Or maybe there’s something unique about the style.

Whether we know it or not, our shoe choice is related to how we feel. And that connection comes down to one thing — booties.

Who doesn’t want bigger booties? They make us feel stronger, tougher and more confident. This is what social scientists call “the body esteem hypothesis”.

According to recent studies, when we wear high-quality footwear, it provides psychological benefits including confidence, increased strength and self-respect. That feels good!

Of course, some people prefer low-heels. It depends on the look and the feeling that you get from them.

But no matter which type of footgear you choose, keep doing fun things with your feet. It helps release stress and leads to better mood.
